― Louisa May Alcott, Little Women
Little women was one of my favorite books as a young girl, I fell in love with the sisterhood they had and of course Jo's ambition. All the sisters were so drastically different and each had their own unique mind and spirit. This story truly changed my life as a young lady.
As a girl growing up in the 90's we were taught that we could achieve anything if we put our minds to it, at least this is what we were told at school. But in the real world, at home, at church, and at social functions, we were told and shown something different. Although we were allowed to do whatever our hearts desired, society still was directing us to become a mother, a wife, and to strive for that white picket fence. In my adolescent years i never planned on becoming a mother. My friends all wanted babies and a happy little marriage, while i wanted to become a successful businesswoman. Although i do have children, a husband and a brown fence now, and i couldn't imagine my life without them, it wasn't my plan when i was younger. This great movie, and the second made in 1994, made it so i knew i wasn't alone. Throughout history there have always been girls with greater ambition than the stereotypical mother and wife roles society has encouraged us to be. I will astonish you all someday.
